Screen icons

The following are screen icons that you need to know and understand to be able to search the Internet with ease.

Remember that these buttons will look slightly different depending on which Internet browser you are using. The most common browsers are Internet Explorer or Netscape.

  Back and Forward buttons
With these you move between the web pages you have already viewed, like a book's pages allowing you to relook at what you have seen.
 


 
    Stop button
This button is displayed while a page is busy loading. The moment the page has finished loading it will become inactive (light grey colour). Use the "Stop" button when you clicked to open (download) a page, but want to stop it from opening. You might do this when the page takes too long to open.
   
    Reload or Refresh buttons
Use this button to reload or refresh the page. This button will only be displayed when the page has finished loading. It is used to see if the page has changed since you last saw it.
   
    Home button
When you click on this icon it will take you back to your home page, e.g. the home page of your technikon, university or even your Library web site, depending on what Home page has been set for your browser.
   
    Search button
When you click on this icon you will be able to start your search on the Internet. This button will take you to a list of search engines you can make use of, e.g. Google, Alta vista, Infoseek, etc.
   
    Print button
To print the page that is displayed on your computer monitor, click on the Print icon.
