Community Engagement

CTS Career guidance and mentorship Community Project Initiative for High School Learners

Rural areas are one of the largely neglected spaces of the country in South Africa. Despite advances in legislation, the majority of young people in South Africa still suffer from lack of skills to make them economically independent. Lack of career guidance and the under-preparedness of High School students have proved to be the biggest problems for post-Secondary Institutions. Causes of poor throughput rates at Institutions of Higher Learning have been traced and concluded to be largely facilitated by uninformed enrolment. Given the above predicaments, the Centre for Transdisciplinary Studies has embarked on a career guidance project targeting Grade 9 School pupils to assist them to choose subjects that will lead them to the career choices they want to pursue. This initiative also aims to deepen the thinking of these learners with regards to their infinite role in society, enhance self- esteem, inspire and motivate them to reach their full potential, through dialogue, career advice, advice on learnership opportunities, bursary opportunities and positive role modelling.
