Dondolo holds D Litt et Phil in History from UFH.  He also holds MA, BA Honours and BA from UWC. A historian by training, his area of interest is the 19th and 20th centuries history thematic areas of the then Cape Province, South Africa. His field of specialisation is public history with specific focus on South African history, heritage studies, museology, African history, Pan Africanism and Black Consciousness scholarship, racism and identity. Dondolo is a Fulbright Scholar and was based at Cheyney University, US, for 2016/17 academic year.  He is also the Rockefeller Scholarship holder and as such spent the 2001/02 academic year at the Centre for the Study of Public Scholarship, Emory University in Atlanta, US, to develop his knowledge on public history, museology and heritage studies, and African history. During this period, he did his summer internship at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, particularly at the Centre for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, and the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute in Alabama, US. Dondolo is currently working on a book project that examine the meaning, relevance and impact of Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe’s teachings and ideas post-1994 in South Africa. He has published a number of journal and book chapters. He has also presented numerous academic articles in various international and national conferences. Dondolo has 20 years of experience in research and heritage sector, including six years of lecturing and supervision of Honours, Masters and Doctoral students and working in local government. In this period, he worked at the Wits University, University of Pretoria, University of the Western Cape, Amathole District Municipality, South African Heritage Resources Agency, District Six Museum, Human Sciences Research Council, Robben Island Museum and Research Associate at the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research (VIAD) at the University of Johannesburg, to mention a few.  Dondolo is the former Council Member of the Gauteng Provincial Heritage Resources Agency. He is the former Chairperson of the National Museum Council based in Bloemfontein. The former Nelson Mandela Museum Council Member. Also, the former peer review editor for the international journal - Museological Review- in the field of museums and heritage studies. This is an online journal published annually by a community of PhD students of the School of Museum Studies at the University of Leicester in UK.
