Dear Staff and Students

It is with a heavy heart and a deep sense of loss and sadness that I have to inform the university community of the untimely passing of Mr Thembekile Makwetu, fondly known as Kimi.  He was one of the recently appointed UFH Council members bound to start a four-year term in this apex structure of governance at the university.  The  Administrator, Mr Nhlanganiso Dladla, together with all friends of Fort Hare were looking forward to his brilliant contributions, and truly feel cheated through his passing.

Mr Makwetu was the outgoing Auditor-General of the Republic of South Africa.  He leaves behind  a sterling record in good governance practices in all the institutions he has served in throughout his career.

On behalf of the Administrator, Executive Management and the wider university community, I wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to  members of the Makwetu family, their friends and relatives, and wish them strength during this difficult time.

We pray that his soul will rest in eternal peace and that his beloved wife Miranda and their 3 children find strength to cope with the loss of someone loved by so many.

Sincerely,

Njabulo Zuma
