Nduduzo Makhathini bags another award
Fort Hare’s very own Nduduzo Makhathini, a lecturer and head of music department has added to his music cabinet, the All Africa Music Award in the category of the best artist in African jazz on 12th November at the Eko Convention centre in Lagos, Nigeria. The jazz musician, a pianist and composer brought home earlier in the year a SAMA in the best Jazz album category. The world class annual event is broadcasted live in 84 countries worldwide.
The prestigious AFRIMA recognizes excellence and promotes Africa’s music culture. He was nominated alongside South African artist such as, Hugh Masekela, AKA, Emtee in three different categories, Best male Artist in Southern Africa, Revelation of the African continent and Best in African Jazz. The record that won him this award is a solo piano improvisation record that was inspired by his journey in music from childhood to adulthood. He has released six albums thus far and collected six awards this year alone. Said Makhathini, “I am utterly grateful for this award and I am very humbled by the recognition that I have received this year and I am thankful that my contributions to plenary consciousness are being acknowledged. I would love to thank my wife and children, the University of Fort Hare, fellow musicians and supporters for all the support they have given me. I shall continue to make you proud”.
