Music students record song with Ladysmith Black Mambazo
University of Fort Hare music students have recorded a song with Grammy Award winners Ladysmith Black Mambazo.The group is spending a week at the university and conducting a master class workshops with the music department, exploring the complex origins of African music, especially isicathamiya.Founding member Albert Mazibuko said: “ [We will] eventually compose a song that will be in the group’s next album. “We are here to learn from and share experiences with the students.” Fort Hare was abuzz with music from as early as 9am. The group and students created different renditions of the group’s songs and soon the studio had become a stage where new dance moves were being tried.
Level four Bachelor of Arts student Sipokazi Ngxokolo was overjoyed that women were being included in isicathamiya. “Today is about creating new things, breaking new ground and simply creating magic,” Ngxokolo said.The legends were to perform on Tuesday night at the Guild Theatre with the students and jazz pianist Nduduzo Makhathini, head of UFH’s music department.
