The Language Centre hosts its first Language Indaba

On 10 March 2017, the newest centre in the University of Fort Hare held its first event, the Language Indaba Implementation issues. The director, Prof. Monwabisi Ralarala remarked on the importance of having continued conversation of such calibre with stakeholders to ensure sustained debates on language implementation at operational and strategic levels. 

 

The purpose of this event was to allow stakeholders of the University, including students and staff, to implement and be part of the language Indaba in its recognition of South African languages. The Centre is meant to initiate the interest of students and academics in the domain of Multilingualism in higher Education and language development. The focus of the Centre is not only on enhancing the academic literacy for the benefit of the learner but to assist in relation to viable strategies and possible interventions that could improve student access and success.

The strategies which the Centre put emphasis on are based on:

  • Academic imperatives
  • Administration imperatives;
  • Symbolic imperatives; and
  • Ceremonial imperatives
