The University of Fort Hare Ladies Rugby Team known as Baby Blues were crowned the Champions of the 2017 Ladies Section in Alice on Monday the 17 of April 2017. They beat the defending champions Busy Bee from Cape Town convincingly 14 – 5 the final score on the day.  In the play offs they also had to deal with another Cape Town outfit Blue Jet beating them 12 – 0 in the end. The player of the match in the final went to Lusanda Dumke who is the first year student doing the BA Degree. She was just outstanding and really showed class skills throughout the tournament justifying to everyone why she is the Vice-captain of the team.

The Captain of the Baby Blues Piya Kwinana was extremely proud of the team efforts throughout the Score Red Lion Easter tournament. She said the girls were much disciplined during the camp leading to the event and everyone just wanted to do well. So I am really grateful to lead a team with quality girls that are hungry for success. I wish we can carry the same form to the Border League and make our mark and presence be felt locally as well.

Ntyatyambo Mkhafu the Head Coach of the team was extremely happy for the girls and praised unity plus hard work as the reason for this success. He really thinks the girls will be a force to be recognised in the league sharing the same sentiments as the Captain Piaya. What is important for now is us being focused and not lose our selves going forward as we need to go to Cape Town and defend the cup next year. A big thank you must be given to Score Energy Drink for sponsoring the tournament on behalf of all the teams that took part – we really appreciate their support. Secondly a big thank you to Mr Loyiso Lange the Head of Sport at our University for supporting the team with basic needs such as nutrition and strapping before and after the tournament.
