Prof Nicole Ulrich joined the History Department as a Senior Lecturer 1 September 2021. She received her PhD from WISER (Wits) and has held a visiting fellowship (Centre of African Studies) at the University of Cambridge. She is currently serving as a Corresponding Editor for the International Review of Social History (IRSH) and is part of the EU Worlds of Relations of Coercion in Work COST network.

Research Interests: 

Prof Ulrich is interested in the political ideas and identities of commoners and labouring classes in southern Africa and their location in global traditions of radicalism and flows of labour. She has developed and taught courses at postgraduate and undergraduate level on topics such as Africa and the modern world, African maritime history, and labour history. She has supervised six honours students, three master students, is co-supervising one PhD. In terms of community engagement, Prof Ulrich is involved in worker education and worker heritage.

Publications: 

Prof Ulich has published widely – including book chapters/ accredited local and international journal - articles on social and labour history.
