Economics

The Department of Economics is one of the largest departments in the Faculty of Management and Commerce at the University of Fort Hare (UFH). It plays a pivotal role in the development and enhancement of skills in different spheres of economics and commerce. At present, the Department is involved with the offering of a range of degree programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. At undergraduate level, it offers a Bachelor of Commerce in Economics both at the Alice and East London campuses. It also provides a four year Bachelor of Commerce (foundation) programme as well as service courses in other degree programmes, such as Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting), Bachelor of Commerce (Business Management) Bachelor of Commerce (Industry Psychology) and Bachelor of Commerce (Information Systems). At Postgraduate level, the Department offers taught BCom Honours Courses in Economics. The Honours programmes allow learners to specialise in any of the three streams, namely: General economics and Transport economics at the Alice Campus and Financial Markets at the East London Campus. The division of the honours programme into three streams is intended to meet the needs of the market in specialized areas and to attract an increasing number of students. The department also offers a Master of commerce degree with specialization in Economics which currently is by research. Plans are at an advanced stage to introduce a taught Masters programme. Lastly the department also offers a PhD programme in Economics. These programmes are discussed in detail in their respective sections.
