SENIOR LECTURER/LECTURER: GEOLOGY

Alice Campus (Ref No:564)      

Senior Lecturer: R 537 636 – R 668 851 per annum (All-inclusive package)

Lecturer: R 435 051 – R 540 620 per annum (All-inclusive package)

 

The Department of Geology at the University of Fort Hare invites suitably qualified individuals to apply for the following position at market-related remuneration package. The successful candidate will join a university, which is ranked in the first top 7 universities in terms of research in South Africa. The department, based in Alice campus, has highly motivated staff with a strong desire to carry out research in niche areas of economic, mining and exploration geology, water resource and quality management, geohydrology, engineering geology, geochemistry, petrology, structural geology, sedimentology, petroleum geology and geophysics, and exploration geophysics. We are seeking a Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer with a strong background in fundamental and applied geology and who can teach a wide spectrum of geology courses at undergraduate and Honours level. The applicant must show good evidence of research, publications, supervision of postgraduate students and significant teaching experience at tertiary level. Successful candidates will play a significant role in contributing to the development of the department as a research centre of excellence in different branches of geology.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • Teach fundamental geology and applied geology courses at undergraduate and Honours levels.
  • Organise and lead field trips.
  • Recruit and supervise postgraduate students.
  • Initiate research projects and apply for research funding from academic and industrial grant providers.
  • Undertake academic research and publish the results in accredited journals.
  • Participate in community engagement.
  • Perform academic leadership, mentorship to junior staff and related administrative duties

 

Requirements: 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND COMPETENCIES:

  • A Masters or a PhD degree with a strong component in fundamental geology or applied geology.
  • Extensive teaching and research experience in geology.
  • Extensive research and publications record commensurate with the level of appointment
  • Extensive postgraduate supervision experience
  • Good teamwork, communication, commitment and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to provide academic leadership.
