INSTITUTIONAL ADVANCEMENT EXPERT/ TURN-AROUND STRATEGIST: OFFICE OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR

SIX (6) MONTHS CONTRACT (FLEXI-TIME)


 

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) is seeking the services of a turnaround strategist on a flexible basis to transform its Institutional Advancement Division. The Division reports to the Vice-Chancellor and is charged with promoting the University’s public image and unlocking donor support in order to support more effectively the University's vision of becoming a vibrant, equitable and sustainable African university, committed to teaching and research excellence at the service of its students, scholars and the wider community.

Institutional Advancement includes UFH’s fundraising, marketing and communication units. Its role is to advance the University's mission and vision in support of our core mandate and strategic objectives. Currently, the Division is also responsible for running an integrated and comprehensive external/stakeholder relations programme, including alumni affairs; media; marketing and communications; student recruitment; community, government, and business relations; continuing education; special events; and university development.

Following a recent External Quality Audit Report, the UFH seeks to re-focus and strengthen the Institutional Advancement Division to enable it to more effectively support the Vice-Chancellor in pursuing the University’s strategic objectives.

Towards this goal, UFH seeks to engage an expert in advancement with extensive knowledge and experience in the field of higher education communication, fundraising and marketing

 


 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:

  • The main task is to assist UFH to strengthen, re-focus and re-launch Institutional Advancement and related activities. Specifically, the expert will be required to:
  • Operationalise the external quality audit report as well as conduct a RASCI-type exercise to determine the roles and credentials currently in place.
  • Determine and strategically align the functions, structures, roles and credentials necessary for an efficient Advancement Division with a functional fundraising operation at its core.
  • Liaise with stakeholders, especially the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Academic Affairs Division, and the Registrar’s office to develop a turn-around strategy for Advancement.
  • Design a plan for implementing and managing the turnaround process, including organisational design, staffing roles, and reporting systems.
  • Support strategic focus areas, including activating a donor-alumni database on a suitable platform, improving the functionality and dynamism of the website, and conducting a brand audit.
  • Assist UFH’s leadership in launching the turn-around strategy.
  • Advise UFH’s management on the recruitment of a Director.

 

 

Requirements: 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of all areas of higher education fundraising/institutional advancement.
  • Extensive knowledge of the South African higher education landscape.
  • Five years of demonstrated and progressively increased fundraising experience in the higher education sector and/or a proven track-record of soliciting and securing major gifts and/or experience in the planning and management of successful capital campaigns.
  • Up to date knowledge of fundraising, corporate communication and marketing strategies and trends in higher education globally.
  • Personal qualities of being a team player with a strong service philosophy and a willingness to help others succeed.
  • Management experience.
  • Experience in change management.
